Effects
Animals are the ones affected greatly by Oil Spills. Many animals are killed not because of the actual oil spill but of other harms in their environment. Animals such as birds, can be affected by the detergents used to clean up the spill and can pick up these detergents by absorption, inhalation and ingestion. The damage of habitats too can also affect the animals. Delicate habitats, such as coral reefs, are susceptible to poisoning or smothering by oil. Healthy coral reefs act as a nursery for other aquatic life, so their death affects several other species. Oil that enters tidal flats, marshes or mangrove forests can destroy plant life important to many other species in the area, taking years or decades to recover. Also, by these damages made to the animals, several links of the food chain can also be greatly affected. Eating contaminated food can cause an organism to become contaminated itself. For example: Penguins can be greatly affected because their primary food is fish. There has been increase of shipping in Antarctic seas so there is a greater chance of a oil spill to occur therefore the fish, penguins primary food, are affected. No fish, no source of food the penguins.
Oil Spills are one of the leading causes of Pollution in Antarctica. As the shipping activity in the region and oil drilling increases, so do the possibilities of oil spills and accidents. By this, the pollution will increase and the long term effect of this can be fatal for the environment, seas and wildlife of Antarctica. For example: As Oil spills and accidents increase, so does pollution, and as a result of pollution, greenhouse gases will increase and will result as global warming, ice packs and glaciers will melt and see depth will arise. It will go on and on and recur again and again, until we, the people, will eventually be left with nothing.
